Children's Book Week 2004: 'Doorways'
The Children's Book Council of
Australia (CBCA) was established in 1946 to promote quality Australian
children's literature. It is a non-profit, volunteer organisation
with branches in each State and Territory. The major focus activities
of the CBCA throughout Australia are driving the Children's Book of
the Year Awards, and Childrenís Book Week, held annually in the
third week of August.
The Book of the Year Awards are
presented to books in four fiction categories (Early Childhood,
Younger Readers, Older Readers and Picture Book), and the Eve Pownall
Award for Information Books. The eight judges on the panel (one from
each State and Territory) read and report on every book entered each
year (366 books in 2004). The Winning and Honour Books are announced
on the Friday before Childrenís Book Week.
To celebrate Children's Book Week,
the CBCA WA supports authors, illustrators and storytellers, who hold
sessions for children in public libraries all over the State.
CBCA WA also holds the Make Your Own
Storybook Competition, for children in school years 1-10 to create
their own books. This competition, running for over 25 years, has
attracted over 1100 entries in 2004.

Children'ís book week!
It's time to celebrate Australian
Children's Book Week. Held from 21st to the 27th of August, Children's
Book Week promotes our local literary talents through sessions for the
public and school groups at public libraries.
Authors and illustrators are in the
spotlight nationally with the announcement of the Children's Book of
the Year Award Winners. Each year a theme celebrating books is chosen
and this yearís theme, 'Doorways' suggests books are doorways to
our imagination.
How do you help your child enter
though these doorways? By reading to them! Read aloud to your children
from birth; when children listen to stories, they hear new sounds,
increase their vocabularies, and stretch their imaginations. So give
it a go! Read aloud and share your favourite books with your kids as
often as you can, for as many years as you can! Join your local
library and discover new treasures together.
