Important
role for dads
-Ausrtralian Breastfeeding Association
Theyíve
been to the classes, read the brochures and gone through the joy and
elation of being there when their bundle of joy is born, but fathers
can do much more. Most agree that a fatherís approval and support
are two of the most important factors influencing a motherís
decision to breastfeed. Research has found that women are 10 times
more likely to breastfeed if they have a partner who prefers their
baby is fed in this way. As well as encouraging their partner to
breastfeed, the Australian Breastfeeding Association says there are
lots of other ways fathers can get to know their baby during the early
months. They can dress and undress the baby, bath, cuddle and play
with it. Taking the baby for a walk in the pram, backpack or sling can
give the mother some welcome time to herself while giving father and
baby more time together.
The
Australian Breastfeeding Association also runs ìBasics of
Breastfeedingî seminars, which are a great introduction to the
Australian Breastfeeding Associationís support network for both
parents.
