Being a good student

Confucius wrote: ìa scholar is one who does not desire great accumulation of wealth, but looks on any accomplishments as riches.î Presuming that Confucius was speaking metaphorically in this instance, what does the above quote mean?

It becomes clearer if we change the word ìwealthî to ìwinningî. We can then say that a student is one who holds earned accomplishment from hard work as the greatest success. Winning, while nice, becomes a lesser value than striving for educational excellence. Each of us is an individual with our own strengths and weaknesses and each of us learns at a different pace. Based upon this idea, we can expect to not always be the best. The point is that winning is secondary to giving education (or anything else) your best effort.

Sifu George Michielsen of the Chinese Kung Fu & Tai Chi Academy says being a good student means going to class regularly, doing your best and participating actively in each dayís lessons. If you listen to the lessons passed on by your masters or teachers, take time to think about what you are being taught, practice and work toward success to the best of your ability then you will increase your knowledge and ability to perform.

A good student is attentive to the dayís lessons and respectful to teachers and other students. As Confucius wrote, for a true student the greatest reward is learning.

The Real D-E-A-L for Kids and Parents

Diet - Environment - Attitude - Lifestyle The rates of childhood asthma, allergies, ADD/ADHD, depression and cancer continue to rise in Australia. This is despite the extra money we put into the medical system each year. Perhaps that is because parts of the existing system donít really serve our children or us any more.

The current system is geared towards managing the symptoms of disease through an ever-increasing and expensive battery of legal drugs. Many of these drugs have serious and long-term side effects and do little, if anything, to actually treat the cause of the illness.

Of equal concern is the fact that logic, common sense and science tell us that there are solutions to these problems that involve changes in our Diet, Environment, Attitude and Lifestyle (DEAL) factors. But these continue to be brushed aside at the expense of our childrenís health.

Research overwhelmingly shows that nutritional deficiencies (particularly in the essential fatty acids), exposure to toxic chemicals in the home, unhealthy and inactive lifestyles and negative attitudes are having a large and negative affect on the health of our kids.

With a little bit of information and with some small changes we can all make huge improvements to our health and the health of our kids.

This information and much more will be available at a life changing presentation by Dr Peter Dingle on Monday September 27th at the Whitfords Church of Christ, Scaphella Avenue, Mullaloo. Doors open at 6.30pm for a 7.15 start, and Dr Dingle will talk for 90 minutes about the DEAL and how we can all achieve a healthier and happier lifestyle.

This is a free community event sponsored by Mullaloo Community Kindergarten, through a grant from the Community Kindergartens Association.

Limited seats are available so bookings are essential. Julie 94032171 / Dagmar 94025661 / Lisa 94036790 or by email at additivealert@bigpond.com.
