Learn
to sail during school holidays
Would
your children like to learn to sail or are you perhaps looking for an
interesting holiday activity for them? Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club
is conducting its popular holiday learn to sail programme during third
term holidays, 4 to 8 and 11 to 15 October, 2004.
One-week
courses are conducted by instructors accredited by Yachting Australia,
in the safe and sheltered waters of Freshwater Bay in Peppermint
Grove. Enrolments are open to boys and girls between the age of 6 and
17. Swimming ability and water confidence are essential.
Courses
on offer range from ëLittle Tackersí fun introduction to sailing
for 6 to 9 year olds to the structured, Yachting Australia logbook
programmes ëGet into Small Boat Sailingí in Optimist and Pacer
Classes. Fees are $100 for Little Tackers and $165 for 15 hours log
book courses.

Nearer
to Nature spring adventures
The
Department of Conservation and Land Managementís Nearer to Nature
program has a wonderful range of spring nature-based activities. The
program runs for six weeks and includes school holiday activities
specially designed for children.
Nearer
to Nature has created many ways for kids to experience and enjoy
nature including frog searches, forest fairy fantasies, native
animal-inspired art and Nyoongar cultural experiences with dancing and
singing.
The
program kicks off on Sunday 19 September with the Forest Discovery
Festival at The Hills Forest Discovery Centre, Mundaring. On this day,
people will be able to explore trails on guided walks, get tips on
walking the Bibbulmun Track and cycling the Munda Biddi Trail, meet
the animals that live in our forests, see wildflowers in bloom and
much more.
Activity
costs begin from $7.50 per person with venues all over Perth, from
Joondalup to Mandurah and east to The Hills Forest Discovery Centre,
Mundaring.

Baboon ñ What
a baby!
With
the introduction of Adults at Kidsí Prices every Wednesday at Perth
Zoo for the remainder of the year, it is certainly a great time to
come and see one of the newest animals ñ baby baboon ëTayeí ñ
the first born at the Zoo in almost 20 years.
The
tiny three-month-old infant ñ who can be seen in the baboon exhibit
at the entrance of the African Savannah ñ is delighting staff and
visitors with his cheeky character and adventurous antics. Taye is
doing extremely well, looking strong and healthy and living up to his
Ethiopian name, which means ìhe has been seenî.
The
Hamadryas baboon lives in Ethiopia, Somalia, Saudi Arabia and Yemen
and is classified as ënear threatenedî which means that without
protection it may become yet another threatened species in the wild.
