TALK ABOUT TOWN

Come celebrate with the Beach House

The Beach House Kids Fun Centre in O'Malley Street, Osborne Park, has just celebrated its third birthday and is ready to expand. On 2 October the centre will open a new 500-square-metre play and party extension for 7to 12 year olds.

The bright, clean and spacious venue has become a very popular place for children to have fun and party, while parents and grandparents sit and relax in the great cafÈ and enjoy a coffee with friends.

The Beach House is a not-for-profit business owned and operated by Beachway Church. Public support enables the centre to have a positive impact on the community by means of supporting programmes for parents and families in need.

To celebrate the new extension the Beach House has prizes, a free party draw and much more happening in the first week of the school holidays. So get along and join in the fun!

For more information phone The Beach House Kids Fun Centre on 9242 8800 or visit www.thebeachhouse.org.au

One Today
- Bruce Russell

Apparently I am one year old today, whatever that means. There's a cake with a single candle, and a lot of food. Yum. The downside is that Mum's been very busy and hasn't had the usual amount of time to play with me.

Here comes the first guest now, Aunt A. She's beautiful like Mum and loves to tickle me with her nose. Oh no, here comes my Uncle D. Heís a tall man with a gruff voice and he bounces me around a lot and pinches my cheek.

A whole lot more people are arriving. Once the adults get a glass in their hand, they talk like crazy. I wish Mum didn't look so frazzled.

Here come Grandpa with a big box. He opens it, pull out a shiny thing with wheels and sits me on it. He wants me to like it. I might later, but right now I want Mum.

There's Dad. He doesn't live with us any more, but I see him all the time. He plays wild rough games and gentle ones. He's with two of his friends, big men who drink their beer straight out of the can.

Now it's all going to hell. People are pressing in close, they want to hold me and cuddle me. A man with a camera keeps flashing it in my face. Mum lights the candle on the cake and everyone is singing. My great granny is here, she's so small now, maybe one day she'll be my size. Dad has come over with his two mates, they're all in the back row, smiling. All the cousins, all Mum's friends, my grandpa from New Zealand, they're all pressing in tight and Mum is holding me and they all start to sing. Then we bend down close to the cake and blow the candle out. Everyone cheers and I do my new clapping things, which really gets them. There isn't a dry eye in the house.

Now, could you please all go away? Itís time for my feed.

Social situations
- Carol Smith, Clinical,
Psychologist, Child and Adolescent Specialist

I seem to be spending a lot of time talking to kids about how to handle bullying and teasing. This however, is often not the initial reason that children and teenagers are brought along to see me. Usually their parents are concerned about "school behaviour problems", or anger/aggression at home, or eating problems or excessive worry.  However social difficulties are often the crux of the problem.

It seems that different kids respond in different ways to teasing, and that teasing (even by siblings) can have a great impact on self esteem. Parents become frustrated that their child is not listening to them, or unable to handle the teasing. However, the fact is that the typical solutions to teasing (i.e. ignore them, walk away, tell a teacher, tell them to stop, hit them back), donít work too well, especially when the teasing is well established.

It is a myth that people who tease others typically have psychological problems (although some might). Teasing is as common as vegemite sandwiches and kids tease because it is fun to humiliate someone else and see them upset.  It is a nasty game that has very serious consequences for the victim.

However, there are ways to turn the game around so that your child comes out on top, and this may only take two to three sessions with a child psychologist. For information contact Carol on 0407 828944, or for appointments call 9328 2064.

Affordable home help!

Start your preparation for Christmas the right way with that extra pair of hands living in, helping with washing, ironing, vacuuming, school drop offs, pickupsÖ the usual routine. Enjoy life, get a Demi Pair.

Demi Pairs are female students from Italy, Belgium, France, Switzerland and Germany that help with the kids and the housework. Here's how it works for me.

Anja, 20, is from Germany. She works 15 hours and one night babysitting and I pay her $50 per week plus full board.

7.30-8.00am Anja empties the dishwasher, hangs out the washing, makes the kids beds, helps with breakfast then goes to school.

4.30-7.30pm Anja plays with the kids while I cook or she might do some ironing or vacuuming. She sets the table and cleans up after dinner. She then helps me get the three kids to bed.

Anja is there if I need to run out to the shops (my husband works away) and twice a week I get time for exercise when she gets home from school.

Saturday mornings she cleans her bathroom (shared with the kids), tidies the kids rooms and other family areas while we are out.

My Demi Pair helps keep me sane!

Client feedback loud and clear

Since winning multiple awards, young West Australian professional photographer, Nicole McCluskey, continues to break new ground. She is now offering unique childrenís photography from Perth to Augusta. Nicole loves utilising the beautiful locations the West Australian coast offers, so it is not surprising that her workload has continued to grow.

Nicole's list of satisfied clients continues to grow and Helen from Margaret River is a typical example: "I had been wanting to get candid, natural photos of my two children for so long. I just never seemed to get around to it. When I picked up 'Kids in Perth' and saw Nicole's ad, I thought, 'today's the day!'"

"I was really impressed with her website and stunned that she answered my email enquiry so promptly. Nicole is very patient with kids. My kids just loved her - maybe it's because she is a mum herself - but she certainly brings out the best in kids. I would recommend her to anyone. In fact, I have already sent a couple of my girlfriends to her. I loved my photos so much I am now going to go back every year."

If you've wanted some unique photos of your children but haven't had time to, perhaps Nicole's spring promotion is just the motivation you need. Nicole is offering a A4 sized print with each poster sized image ordered.*

This is the hot question on every girl's lips and they're talking about Perth's latest party craze from Parties Kids Remember. The question is - which one?

What chemicals are you using?

Research from 1999 shows that 20% of people in Perth know they suffer from Multiple Chemical Sensitivity. How many more are unaware? Chances are you will know somebody who is affected.

Supermarket brands often contain dangerous and potentially poisonous chemicals like phosphates, ammonia, alkalines and chlorine bleach. Some of these chemicals are deadly if swallowed by children, many more cause health problems such as asthma, eczema, dermatitis etc.

Even our personal care products and cosmetics can be harmful. Today Tonight recently featured an article (21 Sept) showing that 99% of all personal care and cosmetic products contained ingredients that had not been tested for safety, and that "even the ones that have been tested have shown concerns for cancer and developmental problems."

Many people are unaware that they have other choices. There are products available containing natural alternatives such as tea tree oil, natural enzymes, natural surfactants, sugar cane extract, baking soda, vinegar, citrus solvents and many more natural ingredients. In general these are cheaper as well as safer and more effective than supermarket brands, and they come with a 90-day money-back Guarantee.

For information on how to obtain these products, phone Liane Hogan: 0417 936 955 or 9409 4093

Aqua-Net saves life as well as water
-Rodger James

The Aqua-Net Swimming Pool Safety Net has been installed over many hundreds of swimming pools in Western Australia during the past sixteen years (32 years worldwide). While we know hundreds of toddlers and children have been prevented from drowning, we now discover that our newly developed product, the Aqua-Net Child and Debris Barrier (CDB) is guaranteed to save between an estimated 11,000 litres and 60,000 litres of mains water per average swimming pool per year! This is a staggering 50 per cent of the total capacity of the swimming pool.

These estimates arose from a report in the Australian House and Garden Publication earlier this year as a result of finding by Sydney Water (NSW). The CDB will prevent your child from drowning as well as save you hundreds of dollars in water evaporation over the years to come. There are many other benefits, including solar pool heating, a built in leaf and debris cover, a clean and hassle-free swimming pool, plus savings on the cost of service calls.

We continue to supply and install Swimming Pool Safety Nets as well as high quality Leaf and Debris Covers as single units. No drownings have occurred worldwide where the Aqua-Net is correctly installed and in place.

For more details about all of our products contact Rodger on 9335 6986 or email aquanet@bigpond.com.au.  For the sake of our children's safety, we take your calls seven days a week.
