Aqua-Net saves life as well as water
-Peter Gray

The Aqua-Net Swimming Pool Safety Net has been installed over many hundreds of swimming pools in Western Australia during the past fifteen years. While we know hundreds of toddlers and children have been prevented from drowning, we now discover that our newly developed product, the Aqua-Net Child and Debris Barrier (CDB) is guaranteed to save between an estimated 11,000 litres and 60,000 litres of mains water per average swimming pool per year! This is a staggering 50 per cent of the total capacity of the swimming pool.

These estimates arose from a report in the Australian House and Garden Publication earlier this year as a result of finding by Sydney Water (NSW). The CDB will prevent your child from drowning as well as save you hundreds of dollars in water evaporation over the years to come. There are many other benefits, including solar pool heating, a built in leaf and debris cover, a clean and hassle-free swimming pool, plus savings on the cost of service calls.

We continue to supply and install Swimming Pool Safety Nets as well as high quality Leaf and Debris Covers as single units. No drownings have occurred worldwide where the Aqua-Net is correctly installed and in place.

For more details about all of our products contact Rodger on 9335 6986. For the sake of our children's safety, we take your calls seven days a week. Aqua-Net (Est. 1988). We strive to improve!

Loss, change and traumatic events
- Frankie Needham, Counsellor and Play Therapist

Parents are often concerned about the impact of events on their children. Many children are unable to explain what they are thinking or feeling. This is natural. Factors that influence their ability to express themselves are: developmental levels; ability to name feelings; or the inability to disclose their distress, especially when a parent is distressed.

As they struggle to make sense of what has happened, children can be frightened or feel their sense of security is undermined. This is difficult for parents to cope with. Children usually let us know that they are not okay when they engage in acting out behaviours.

They may appear to take a step back in development. For example, a child who was toilet trained can revert, becomes clingy, aggressive with others, or test family or school rules.

Emotional pain and trauma in children can happen as a result of a wide variety of events. Play therapy can make a difference.

If you are at all concerned about you child's behaviour following loss, change or trauma contact 9201 1023 for an appointment.

Education: getting it right
- Carol Smith, Clinical Psychologist, Child and adolescent specialist

Critical educational decisions are often based on the subjective beliefs of parents and educators.  Maybe we should keep Johnny down a grade?  Is Sally gifted?  Lisa is not keeping up with her reading, but do you think she has dyslexia? The teacher says that Peter has attention problems - but could there be a learning issue?

Children with behavioural problems, or those that are not enjoying school may have underlying academic needs that are not being met.

Without objective information, teachers and parents may take positions based on emotions, and tempered by hopes and fears.  Effective educational decision-making must be based on objective information and facts.

An intellectual-educational assessment will assess your child's intelligence and academic level.  To know your child's intellectual level is to know their potential in the classroom.  For example, if your child is assessed as having an above average IQ, then you can expect them to perform near the top of a regular classroom setting.

If your child's academic performance does not match their IQ, then a number of possibilities could explain the difference, including lack of motivation, giftedness/lack of extension in the class, learning or attention problems. Whatever the reason, any difference between academic performance and intellectual potential should ring alarm bells for parents.

A formal assessment will identify exactly what and how big the problem is,  and give parents and educators some guidelines.

Contact Carol on 0407828944 for more information, or for appointments call 9328 2064.

The trouble with adults
- Bruce Russell

"The trouble with adults is they make everything too complicated."

Out of the mouths of babes and sucklings! The speaker is the girl next door, all of 11 years old. Our ten-year-old agrees.

You can learn a lot driving the kids home from school in your complicated car, trying to get through the busy schedule you constructed in your overtaxed adult mind.

"Yeah, like cleaning your room. I know where everything is if I leave it on the floor. As soon as they make me put it away, I can't find it."

"Yeah. And when they argue, they always use big words you can't understand."

"Yeah, and then they argue about what the words mean."

I stopped listening then. It was unbearable. Besides I had a lot to think about. Later, I asked our older girl what she thought about the adult world. She's just left school and for the first time in five years doesn't have to wear a uniform every day.

"They have a lot of freedom," she said. "They can do anything they want."

So there you have it, three points of a triangle: freedom, responsibility, complexity. We try to nurture simplicity in children and shield them from the complex world of power plays and strife. The innocence of children is something society believes in, and rightly so. But when do we lift the veil, welcome them to the world of adults?

There's an old story about a fool who decided not to go into the water until he had learned to swim. I believe that children are fascinated by our adult world and test the water long before they can swim. All we can do, in our funny, complicated, adult way is to do a good job as lifeguards.
