Welcome to Perth, the Robo-City 

The City of Perth will create an awesome interactive robotics exhibition in Forrest Place for the April School Holidays. This wicked holiday activity will include working displays and fun demonstrations. 

ëAIBOí ñ Robot Exhibition: AIBO is an Artificial Intelligent Robotic Dog created by the UWA School of Computer Science & Software Engineering (CSSE). The ëdogí has been programmed and trained to play soccer and dance.

Vinnie the Vacuum: Trilobite 2.0 is a robotic vacuum cleaner from Electrolux. It navigates around an area using ultrasound just like a bat. Watch it avoid obstacles in Forrest Place.

Monster Trail: Follow the monster footprint trail from Forrest Place to the WA Museum and meet Gillman, an impressive animatronics monster!

How to Make a Monster: Become an animatronics puppeteer, maneuvering the crocodile tail from the movie Peter Pan, use X-ray eyes to see what makes ëJunior the Dinosaurí move, check out Inspector Gadgetís gadgets or touch the alien guts from Pitch Black through interactive exhibits.

Western Australiaís greatest prison break 

Join the plot of the most daring and successful prison break in the history of Western Australia. In 1876, after eight years of incarceration at Fremantle Prison, six Irish Fenian convicts escaped on board the American whaler ëThe Catalpaí.  The story of their rescue from imprisonment has all the hallmarks of a best selling thriller.   

Easter Monday 2006 marks 130 years since ëThe Catalpa Escapeí took place.  Experience this remarkable episode of Western Australian history on an exclusive Catalpa Day Tour at Fremantle Prison on 17 April.  Call 9336 9200 for bookings. 

Later in 2006 Fremantle Prison will host ëThe Catalpa Exhibition ñ From Fremantle to Freedomí.  This exhibition will showcase over 200 fascinating artefacts and documents from Ireland, America and Australia, many of which have never been on public display.  For more information contact info@fremantleprison.com.au.

Whatís the Buzz?

Ever seen the fine detail of the foot of a grasshopper?  Visit Whatís The Buzz? at Perth Zoo and youíll be inspired by Jane Davenportís stunning photography, focusing on the intricate details and striking colours of various insects. 

Created especially for Perth Zoo, the outdoor exhibition features giant praying mantis, butterflies and other amazing invertebrates. The beautiful larger-than-life works in the Zooís Australian Rainforest are designed to showcase the significance of these fascinating creatures and their importance to Australiaís incredible biodiversity. The images reveal the artistís deep passion for insects and will inspire a re-consideration of all things multi-legged. 

Youíll be surprised and enchanted by Jane Davenportís ëbugjectí portraits. Buzz in to Perth Zoo from Saturday 1 April to Friday 30 June to check out these amazing images.  Normal admission prices apply.

Toddle for Telethon this month

HBFís Action for Healthy Kids programme is the major sponsor of the HBF Telethon Toddle to be held on Sunday 9 April at Burswood Parklands. The HBF Telethon Toddle is a two-kilometre, non-competitive walking event that encourages children of all ages to be physically active, while at the same time raising money for Telethon.

The event offers free rides and entertainment as well as face painting and balloon artists.  Register the whole family and make a day of it!

Entry fee is $10 for all children and adults (18+) are free. Register at any HBF Service Centre or online at www.hbf.com.au.

West Australian Conservatoire of Classical Ballet, formerly known as Academy Dancentre, is one of Australiaís leading ballet schools, with many students taking up career opportunities in Australia and overseas.

Get up close with the animals at the RSPCA 

Dogs, cats, rabbits, goats and a very special pony ñ theyíre just some of the animals your children can meet at the RSPCA during the April school holidays. The RSPCA Education Unit has prepared a fun and fascinating program of activities to interest kids of all ages during the two-week break. 

Back by popular demand is the new Pet Sense series: an informative and invaluable programme, whether you already have a pet at home or are thinking about getting one. The different sessions introduce children to the basics of caring for dogs, cats and horses. 

Much-loved favourites like ëBe A Volunteerí, ëPassion for Petsí and ëCritter Craftsí will also be running throughout the holidays. 

The RSPCA School Holiday programme runs from Tuesday, 18 to Friday, 28 April 28 at the RSPCA Animal Welfare Centre in Malaga. Bookings are essential as spaces are limited. Contact the RSPCA Education Unit at education@rspcawa.asn.au or on (08) 9209 9325.
