Making a real difference
Lauren Scott enrolled in the maths program at the Kumon
Warnbro Education Centre in January 2005, when she was in Grade Five.
Lauren needed her basic maths skills revised. Within two months of
being enrolled with Kumon Laurenís skills enabled her to move onto
large number additions and subtractions.
In April 2005 Lauren commenced learning her multiplication
tables. The new skills in multiplication and addition that she then
acquired enabled her to commence the study of fractions.
The mastery of addition, subtraction, multiplication,
division and fractions has been due to Laurenís hard work on a daily
basis, support from her parents and Kumon Supervisor, Bruce Cooper.
Her improved skills and ability now see her begin the study of
algebra. Lauren has now commenced studying high school maths whilst
still in Year Seven.
Lauren also started the Kumon English program in July 2005.
Her improved comprehension skills have meant that Laurenís grades in
associated subjects have increased. As well, Lauren has developed her
daily study habit, concentration skills, discipline, confidence and
self-esteem. According to Bruce Cooper, Laurenís Kumon Supervisor,
ìLauren is a delightful, very willing student who realises that the
Kumon program is helping her in all areas of her school work, not just
maths and English.î
The Kumon Method is a highly effective, individually
tailored study program that lays the foundations for studentsí
success in high school. Kumon complements the school curriculum,
helping students achieve long-term academic success. It also develops
personal attributes such as confidence, self-esteem and determination.
Students progress systematically through minutely graded and logically
organised worksheets in both maths and English.
The unique, carefully designed worksheets enable students
to master concepts above their school grade level. For further

Parents
and students needing guidance and help
Julia Gilmore (M.Ed., B.Ed.,Dip.Tch)
In each class, in every primary and secondary school, there
are bright children who are struggling to reach a satisfactory level
in reading, writing, spelling and maths.
Furthermore, there are others in each of those classes who are
ìcruisingî within the satisfactory range of performance and could
be extended ahead and laterally.
So many of the children I assess are very creative and
intelligent, but have difficulties performing in some or all subjects
at school. My heart goes out to the parents of children whose
self-esteem is being continually worn away.
The parents of these children have many relevant concerns
with class numbers creeping up to 35 per class in some instances.
They are also worried about the lack of extra support teachers
for their children within the school.
Many parents bring their children to me for assessment to
find out if they are ahead, average or struggling academically,
according to their chronological age.
All aspects of the child as a learner must be looked at;
not only reading, writing, spelling and math levels, but also visual
and auditory short term memory and sequencing, visual tracking and
focusing, perceptual and motor skills, bi-lateral integration and the
childís emotional and social status.
Tuition is available in the centres or at home and the
specialised and individualised programmes have proven to be highly
successful.
