Media
made for mini eyes
Last month a new infant DVD was released by Minimedia Productions
into book and baby stores Australia-wide.
The news? My Little Everyday ABC was created by an Australian
mother in response to research on the effects of typical TV/video on
young developing brains. The
program was developed using a new media delivery and learning system
free of sensory overload (including rapid visual imaging or ëRVIí)
so that infants can properly process what they see and hear.
ìWhat
seems normal to an adult can prove unrealistically fast-paced for an
infant,î creator Francesca Beattie said.
ìSometimes infants appear happily engrossed in a program
when in fact the ëmesmerisationí is negating the educational
benefits. Experts also
say this can affect infant brains such that they can become
habituated to constant stimulus seeking ñ a serious consideration
in terms of the increasing
incidence of attention
deficit problems diagnosed later on in schoolî.
A qualified barrister with tertiary study in psychology and
sociology, Francesca put her career on hold to look at the world
through infantsí eyes.
This DVD adopts a colourful book-style theme with
engaging narration and virtual lift-the-flap learning.
That Francescaís 21-month-old son knows his alphabet and
has amazingly self-started ëletterí writing says much for the
programís success.
