Not
before time
All of the lead characters among the Muppets are male:
Cookie Monster, Elmo, Oscar the Grouch, Big Bird, Bert and ErnieÖ
The only female Muppet of any consequence, as it turns out, is Miss
Piggy. Now, Miss Piggy is a great character but as role models go, she
was just below Courtney Love on the list of people you wouldnít want
your child to grow up to be.
Of course itís good news that the Muppets have recruited
a new female star in the form Abby Caddaby, described as being a
likeable character that will embrace femininity without being
type-cast as a ìgirly-girlî. But why did it take nine months of
brainstorming to come up with such a character?
Sesame
Streetís executive producer, Carol-Lynn Parente, pointed out that a
lot of ìissuesî tend to be attached to female characters. As she
told the press, "if Cookie Monster was a female character, she'd
be accused of being anorexic or bulimic.î All this despite 50 years
of feminism. Little girls deserve better.
