Reduce your chances of burglary and theft

WA has the worst burglary rate in Australia. The statistics speak for themselves. In Perth a home is broken into once every 19 minutes. This means 100 homes are burgled everyday.

Here are 10 simple steps to help reduce the chance of burglary and theft:

1.  Install an electronic security system ñ the most effective deterrent against home invasion.  Ensure the alarm system conforms to AS2201 and is installed by a licensed installer.

2. Always keep your home locked. Preferably with deadlocks and keyed window locks.

3. Keep your garden well tended.  An overgrown garden provides a good hiding spot for burglars.

4. Always keep your garage door shut. This will keep burglars guessing as to whether youíre at home.

5. Install a peephole or an audio / video intercom in your front door so you can see exactly who is calling.

6. Keep tools and heavy objects out of sight as these could be used to gain entry.

7. Donít leave keys in hiding spots. It is better to leave them with someone you trust.

8. Make sure packages are never left on your doorstep.

9. Always keep your home well lit with security and outdoor lights.

10. Never attach your address to your house keys.
