Choices
in Childbirth
Research shows that continuity of care -
having the same maternity carer throughout pregnancy, labour and the
postnatal period - provides a better birth experience for both mother
and baby, and a reduced likelihood of interventions, including
caesareans.
Around 8,400 women have caesareans in WA
each year, making it the highest caesarean rate in Australia at 33%.
The World Health Organisation suggests that a countryís
caesarean rate should be 10-15% for the risks to outweigh the life
saving benefits.
At Community Midwifery WA we encourage
pregnant couples to explore a range of birthing options before making
any decisions. Continuity
of care is available through our Community Midwifery Program for low
risk pregnancies and we also offer childbirth education classes to
assist couples to make informed birth choices.
